ANTIQUE CLASSES: Revisit Treasures of the Past

We will be exploring and learning about vintage items spanning the late 1880’s through the 1950’s in areas of English China, Ironstone, Dinnerware, and American & European Glassware from elegant to Depression Era, Silver & Silverplate, and Art Pottery.  This session we will have one class devoted just to Furniture.  Learn how to identify and research your treasures to determine their age, country of origin, current “collectibility” and value.  These hands-on classes will assist you in identifying original old items from new and reproduction items.  Learn some tricks-of-the-trade for cleaning and care of your antiques as well as buying and selling techniques and trends, what is hot & what is not, reference guides and dating methods made easy.   The final class will be an appraisal night where students can bring items from home for identification and value.  This 8 week course begins Wednesday October 1, 2008, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.  Cost will be $120.00 for Berkley Residents ($125.00 for non-residents), paid to the City of Berkley Parks and Recreation/Community Center, 2400 Robina, Berkley, MI, 48072, (248) 658-3407. www.berkleymich.org.

Course Agenda

Week #1: Introduction to Antiques, Reference Guides, Care & Cleaning, Buying &

                Selling and Current Market Trends.
 

Week #2: Study of China from early Ironstone to Hand Painted to Bone China and

    American Dinnerware.
 

Week #3: Welcome Guest Lecture John Bistoff with his collections, knowledge and

     enthusiasm on true Depression Glassware.
 

Week #4: Reproductions; Twins are not identical, hands on exposure to reproduction,

                copies, fakes and reissues.
 

Week #5: Welcome Guest Lecture Bob Krug with his vast knowledge of American and

    European Art Pottery.
 

Week #6: Furniture; Field trip to Knightsbridge Antique Mall in Northville for study of

                styles, periods, construction and woods.
 

Week #7: Welcome Guest Lecture Sharon Napier & her family of beloved dolls of all

                ages.
 

Week #8: Appraisal Night.  Each student may bring 2 items in for group discussion and

                appraisal.
